Getting Around

First up, get yourself a map. If you’re in a hotel, they’ll have a tourist map. Otherwise, if you’re a map junkie like me, get a copy of the Eicher Mumbai City Map for Rs250 at any half decent book shop.

Walk the streets, take auto-rickshaws (if you can – they’re banned from the southern regions) and taxis. Take a commuter train-ride but during the day and against the flow (people commute south in the morning and north in the afternoon / evening). There are separate carriages for ladies to save them from a good groping.

Mumbai’s not so much big as massively congested. Depending on the time of day it can take three hours to get from the north (Andheri) down to the south (Colaba).
